'Westbury - Home of the White Horse' say the signs as you drive into town, and its most famous resident is visible for miles. But this is not the whole story. This small country town contains evidence of human activity from before the Roman invasion. Later, fast-flowing streams from the chalk hills powered mills and the woollen industry flourished, surviving until the middle of the twentieth century. Today the centre of Westbury is dominated by one of the last remaining mills. Close by stands the ancient parish church in its peaceful churchyard, and the narrow streets of the original borough lead to the Market Place. To the north, the railway station is an important junction on the West of England line, and to the east the cement works are a reminder of how the area's natural resources have been used in modern times.
