John Bradshaw’s name has survived as that of the ruthless murderer who sentenced Charles I to death in January 1649, but that is not the full story. Bradshaw was one of the most important men involved in the Parliamentarian government during the English Civil War and Interregnum, and his appointment as Lord President of Charles I’s trial was based on merit, not because he was in Cromwell’s pocket or because he was the only man bloodthirsty enough to accept such a job.
