Most football clubs, large or small, amateur or professional, have had their share of goalkeeping legends. Burnley Football Club being no exception.
Throughout their history they have had the likes of England internationals Jack Hillman and Jerry Dawson, who made a record 569 appearances for Burnley. After the Second World War Jimmy Strong represented the club, breaking many records which included 203 consecutive appearances. In the 1950s and 60s Burnley’s Colin McDonald represented England 8 times, which included four caps in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. He was followed by Scottish international Adam Blacklaw who won three caps for his country. The 1970s and 80s had Alan Stevenson and Marlon Beresford representing the clubs last line of defence. At the turn of the millennium Danny Coyne represented Wales 10 times as a Burnley player making him the clubs most capped goalkeeper. He was followed by Brian Jenson (the Beast) whose club career spanned over ten seasons. Making progress is present first choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton who in his first season at Turf Moor in the clubs 2013/14 promotion season conceded only 36 goals.
This publication gives a full insight into Burnley Football Clubs goalkeeping personnel since 1889 and includes their statistics throughout their playing careers.
They will not be the last. For the future we will have to wait and see.
