Burford has been here for more than thirteen centuries and was chartered as a market town over nine hundred years ago. Its market flourished on trade in wool and leather and later it became a racing and coaching resort. But the railways passed Burford by and the agricultural depression in Victoria's reign trapped the town in poverty. While red brick change spread across the land, Burford dreamed on, its honeyed stone largely unaltered. Then with the twentieth century, the motor car brought the world back to Burford and once again the streets are busy and the pavements crowded. There are more than enough pictures here to feed your imagination with the thoughts of time gone by and to see for yourself how this cherished gateway to the Cotswold Hills and its green valley have changed and yet remained themselves.
